This post is cross posted to O’Flaherty.

I had a great time interviewing people in Chicago and one of the most outstanding interviews was with singer/song writer Christine Kane.

This interview was really special for me because while Christine is first and foremost an artist, the conversation here is a unique take on a marketing and blogging.

Dawud Miracle had this to say about the interview when he posted the raw version of the interview on his blog:

At SOBCon08 last weekend, she sat down with Paul O’Flaherty from FuelMyBlog to chat about music, blogging, business and new opportunities for musicians using social media.

From the interview (below): “…blogging for me has enabled my creativity to reach people who wouldn’t in a hundred years go out to a club.”

I’ve posted the interview (less than 15 minutes) below so business owners – musicians and otherwise – can see a successful niche blogger share what she’s learned about social media that’s made her successful.

Christine has also posted the raw version of this interview and has expanded upon a brilliant little question that was raised in the middle of this interview on her blog.

If you were a real artist, you wouldn’t need a blog
…all you would have to do is paint in your studio, or hang out with your instrument, creating and creating, while the masses of adorers who are feverishly running around looking for someone to adore just continue to find you even though you spend all your time making your art. If you build it, they will come, right? If you were a real artist, they would come and they would discover you. Wouldn’t they?

Christines latest album “A Friday Night in One lifetime” is available from Christines site and is well worth checking out, I was lucky enough to get a free copy of it at SOBCon and you can check out a free sample track here.

While at SOBCon08, I had the distinct pleasure of interview a number of outstanding bloggers.

This video is the first in a series of interview that we will be posting and features Chris Cree from successcreeations.com.

In this video I ask Chris about his involvement with SOBCon as well as getting Chris to share some tips for bloggers and tell share what he thinks separates successful bloggers from everybody else.

I had a great time interviewing and talking with Chris and I hope you enjoy the video.

We’d like to thank the guys at ERA London for sponsoring the loan of a shiny new laptop during the event.

Which would you prefer to have 1000 subscribers or 100 readers?

I know what I’d prefer to have and that idea is exactly why I don’t display my subscriber count on O’Flaherty.

You may be wondering where this is stemming from, well Corvida from SheGeeks asked:

“For those that have their RSS subscriber stats on their blog, when did decide to put yours up? At what number do you think it’s beneficial for others to do the same?”

My first reaction was that I will not share my subscriber numbers, not because I’m ashamed of my readership count (I’m not) but because I want to avoid the whole sheep “me too” mentality of people subscribing to my blog just because everybody else does.

It’s all about engagement for me.

I would much prefer to have 100 engaged readers, who enjoy my content and actively participate by commenting and sharing their opinions than being just another unread feed in a feed reader somewhere.

Lets be honest, the lemmings who subscribe to your blog just because everybody else does are of very little value to you as a blogger.

If all they’re doing is adding a +1 to your subscriber count but not participating in the conversation, or spreading the word about your posts what value are they to you.

Okay, it may look impressive to have 1000 subscribers, but if only 10 are listening it’s just a pie in the sky number in terms of user engagement.

Not only are these subscribers of no value to you because they’re not engaging with, promoting, or clicking on the ads which surround, your content, they’re actually adding to your bandwidth bill.

That’s right. Every time they scroll past your article in a feed reader, they pull your content and any embedded images, resulting in a bandwidth usage which ultimately you have to pay for.

Okay, so lets say that you don’t particularly care about engagement and are all about the numbers. When is it a good idea to put up the button with the subscriber count?

My gut would tell me that to have the maximum effect to the herd brain I would wait until the subscriber count passes 200. Anything less makes you appear small time.

But that’s just me.

The only true advice I’d have for you is that if you do intend to display your subscriber numbers on your blog then don’t fake it. I’ve written about this (and how to do it best to fake it) before. The consequences can be very bad for your true subscriber count.

What do you guys think? When should you, or should you even consider, putting up a subscriber count button on your site?

After all, this isn’t a mine is bigger than your issue is it?
