This feature is our chance to find out a bit more about the bloggers behind the scenes. Thank you MJ for sharing with us all your take on blogging. If you would like to feature on “We are Fuelmyblog” simply email sylvie(at)fuelmyblog.com

What’s your name?

MJ

What’s the name of your blog?

Note to Self

What’s the URL of your blog?

http://margeauxj.blogspot.com/

How old is your blog?

I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half now, but only about a year of that was shared with the public.

If you’re willing to share, how many visitors per day do you have to your blog?

It depends. Some days, I only have about 10 visitors. Other days, I get lucky and I can get up to 75 visitors. Mostly, I have about 10 readers who are devoted to coming, reading, and commenting almost every day. That might not seem like much to most bloggers, but I love it. I like recognizing a blogger’s handle and being able to keep up with my commenters as much as they keep up with me.

How much time do you spend blogging every week?

I used to spend at least four or five hours blogging a week, but with all the different things that have come up in my life recently, I haven’t had as much time. Now I try to spend at least an hour a week blogging.

Is it the creative process or the editing process which take you longest when writing a post?

Probably the editing. As soon as I have an idea, it will only take me about ten minutes max for me to blog it. But then I sit on it… and think about it… and rewrite it… and edit… and then it finally gets posted for your enjoyment.

What inspired you to first start writing a blog?

I was having a hard time in my life, and I really needed an outlet for my thoughts. My blog started as a private blog, but when I had some friends comment that my writing could be enjoyed by others, I gave in and went public. When people actually showed interest in my writing, I fell in love with making people laugh.

What do you do to get inspired to write?

I usually don’t have to try to be inspired. Like other bloggers, I’m sure, I will simply be living my life and something will slap me in the face and I think, I should blog about that. I love writing about my crazy family, my puppy, my cop fiancé, and my insane friends. I wouldn’t have any material without them.

How do you market your blog?

I don’t really market it much. I enjoy letting other bloggers who like my writing spread the word about me. I have done some shameless plugging before, and I’ve also done a blogathon for charity.

What are the blogging tools you cannot do without? Some would disagree, but I love the way blogger is setup. I think it’s so easy to use, and if there is a plug-in you want that isn’t built in, you can simply edit the CSS code. Google Analytics, FuelMyBlog, and Blogger’s new follow tool help me keep up with how many people stick around to read and enjoy what I post.

Is there anything that you simply refuse to blog about?

Not really. I’m not a gratuitous blogger, and I try to keep my material PG-13, but there’s not a whole lot off limits for me and my writing.

If you went for a job interview and were told that you’d have to close your blog in order to get the job, how would you react/feel about it?

I actually had to deal with this recently in my current occupation. There were some posts complaining about some aspects of my job (as I’m sure a lot of people do), and someone in my office found my blog and complained (apparently). The big wigs didn’t like the idea of me having it for the public to see, but I explained it was a personal blog, and that it never named a coworker or even alluded to where I work – it was meant for entertainment value only. They didn’t ask me to take it down, but I have been more guarded about writing about my job. I would never take it down for anyone, but I would be willing to tailor my writing some.

Do you talk about your blog with your relatives and friends or do you avoid mentioning it?

I talk about it all the time! They probably get sick of me talking about “my blog friends” and such, but some of my faraway friends and family love being able to keep up with me this way and have a laugh with me. I’ve been begging my fiancé to become a co-blogger, but I can’t quite get him motivated.

What is the biggest mistake you made when starting your blog?

I didn’t look at other blogs first. I started with absolutely no direction, no substance, and no friends to connect to. I think I learned quickly that I would need pals in the blog world to help keep me motivated and help me with material.

Any tips for aspiring bloggers?

WRITE. A LOT. And write for yourself. If you can make yourself laugh, chances are that you’ll make other people laugh too. Get connected with bloggers by reading their blogs religiously. Comment, comment, comment! Don’t just put people on your blogroll just because – make sure they are blogs you will want to read all the time, and then read them – all the time!

Who are the bloggers that you look up to the most?

I am a big fan of Colby over at colbymarshall.blogspot.com. Her blog was one of the ones that really inspired me to go public, and she has always encouraged my writing.

Do you still see yourself blogging in 5 years time?

Sure! Why not? By then, maybe I will have something more interesting to write about!

This feature is our chance to find out a bit more about the bloggers behind the scenes. Thank you Rotus for giving us a bit of insight on your blogging experience, you are a goldmine of info ;) . If you would like to feature on “We are Fuelmyblog” simply email sylvie(at)fuelmyblog.com

What’s your name?

Clark Bjorke

What’s the name of your blog?

Hah! Which one? I have four of them going now.  I’ll Never Forget The Day I Read A Book, ROTUS, Clark’s Picks and my newest project, Book Review Blog Carnival. I’m obsessive.

How old is your blog?

I started  my first blog, I’ll Never Forget The Day I Read A Book in August of 2007, so a year and a half.

If you’re willing to share, how many visitors per day do you have to your blog?

About three hundred people a day, split, very unevenly, four ways.  I’ll Never Forget The Day I Read A Book, Clark’s Picks get the bulk of it.

How much time do you spend blogging every week?

Actually writing? Maybe four hours a week, and I’ve stopped obsessing about my stats 24 hours a day.

Is it the creative process or the editing process which take you longest when writing a post?

Research! I spend far more time listening to YouTube music videos, reading books and searching for information through Google than I do writing or editing my posts. It makes a great excuse though: Sorry, I can’t take out the garbage now, I doing research.

What inspired you to first start writing a blog?

Back in the dark ages I had kept a journal about the books that I read. I decided to revive it online using Blogger as a notebook. Then people started reading my notebook and I found out that I liked the attention.

What do you do to get inspired to write?

Procrastinate.

How do you market your blog?

I’m doing this interview for one thing. I’ve left witty comments on other blogs, done a bit of guest blogging, joined a bunch of social networking sites, participated in memes and submitted posts to a couple of blog carnivals. Book Review Blog Carnival is a project I started for people who write book reviews on their blogs, to market them together.

What are the blogging tools you cannot do without?

Besides Fuelmyblog? I use both Wordpress and Blogger. Lately I discovered a site called Blogbackupr which will make and save a backup copy of your posts on their site and this morning I discovered one called Mister Linkey’s Magical Widgets, that has some scripts for making blogs interactive. I’mgoing to try some of them. Maybe I’ll regret it, I don’t know.

Is there anything that you simply refuse to blog about?

If there is, Lord Likely ,Daddy P, Fracaswill rush in to fill the need.

If you went for a job interview and were told that you’d have to close your blog in order to get the job, how would you react/feel about it?

I guess if I was starving I’d do it. I am very careful not to blog about anything at my day job and I expect my day job to keep out of my, terribly private, online business.

Do you talk about your blog with your relatives and friends or do you avoid mentioning it?

My father reads all of them. He likes the book reviews and the music posts. We don’t talk about politics, so he doesn’t comment about ROTUS. He did make a Nancy Pelosi joke at Thanksgiving dinner. I laughed politely.

What is the biggest mistake you made when starting your blog?

I used the nom de plume ROTUS, which was derived from a MySpace page I used to have called Resident of the United States. I’ have no need for anonymity.

Any tips for aspiring bloggers?

Only the usual: Write what you know. Don’t post pictures your brother took of himself on the loo.Reverend you listening?

Who are the bloggers that  you look up to the most?

Jon Swift, Windows to Russia, Inside Government, Notes from the
TEFL Graveyard
, Idiot’s Guide to Blogging (even though I resemble the title) Each of them has a
different reason for blogging and a different style, but consistently produces a high quality product.

Do you still see yourself blogging in 5 years time?

Of course! I’m still trying to surpass John Chow. I figure I’ll just outlast him.

Up until now, the forums on Fuelmyblog have been a good place to comment but a poor place to track conversation and I am sorry we have taken so long to address this.  As of now they, like this blog, have been empowered by CoComment.

This means that not only can you track the conversation on this blog and many others, you can follow the conversation in our forums, no more flicking back and forth looking for replies.

If you don’t already have CoComment, the best place to start is to download either one of the following two extensions:-

FireFox extension

IE extension

Then, once added and your browser has restarted, simply go to CoComment, sign-up and watch as every time you add to a conversation, it magically appears in the “My Conversations” section.  And will automatically update when another person leaves a comment, and that goes for the forums too. And whilst this may look to some like a paid post, it isn’t, we simply know the guys there and love their service, by passing this on to you, we hope to increase the conversation in the forums and get them buzzing again.

So without further-a-do come jump in and lets get talking!

There are a few events happening very soon, the excellent BlogWorldExpo, The Future of Social Media and the Future of Web Apps, two have been displayed on the right for a week or so now and there are just two weeks left before BWE starts.

I am unfortunately unable to get to BWE in Las Vegas this year and am sure Rick and the gang will put on another great show, if you are still thinking about going, take my word, it is well worth it and there are some great bloggers to network with and some really interesting companies exhibiting. If anyone on Fuelmyblog is going, do drop us an email, we may have something for you :)

The Future of Social Media is an event aimed at companies looking to work with social media and social networks, the speaker line-up is awesome and if your day job involves Marketing, Branding, New Media, PR or Corporate Communications, this event is for you. I hope to be going and seeing whether a great community like ours will be of interest to some major brands.

The Future of Web Apps is a great must see event for everyone involved in the internet, and that means you dear bloggers!  Stewart at Sun Startup Essentials (click the link to see the comp) is giving away an exhibition stand worth £2.5k for free..you need to have a startup to qualify, good luck although we want to win! :)   But, if you are going, let us know, we’ll be there and will organise a meet up :)

Fuelmyblog Meet-up’s – something I have wanted to do for a long time is to start organising local meet-ups for FMB bloggers. The first will be in London during September, more info soon. If you would like to host one on behalf of us in your country/region, please email us with a suggestion and an idea of numbers.

Hope your week is going well, it’s a wet one in Europe!

Kevin
