Twitter vs Blogging

By Karen from Blazing Minds Guest Posts Add comments

Tuesday I was introducing Michelle on the blog as a new writer and today I would like to welcome Karen also known as Rembeatz. Give her a warm welcome :)

Twitter

Lately everyone seems to have gone Twitter mad, I admit that I myself have become a bit of a Twitter addict, if that’s the right phrase to use…

Lately celebrities have found out about Twitter and they have taken it to their hearts, or maybe it’s their PRs that have starting tweeting for them. Nowadays you turn on the TV and hear the celebrities saying that they Twitter, I even ashamedly follow a few celebrities, or should that be digital stalk celebrities!

But you have to admit that at the end of the day,  nearly everyone is saying things like “Oh yea I tweeted about that the other day” or “Your not on Twitter, WHY!” or the one I hear mostly from my friends to other firends is “YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF TWITTER, where have you been Mars!!!”

So have you become a bit of a Twitter addict, do you spend most of your time tweeting or do you balance your blogging and tweeting, is Twitter a blog replacement, or an extension of your blog, do you think that Tweeting your latest posts helps boost your readers to your blog, I’d love to know ….

Ok I’m off to Twitter ;)

Being a twit, I’ve found ‘Twittering’ to be a lot of fun. I don’t bother about ‘Tweeting’ latest posts but I have picked up on some interesting ’stuff’ …..

When people use it the way it was designed to be used, it gives fascinating insights into people’s lives …… when it’s just used for link after link after link it’s a tad tedious ……

It’s always fun reading your tweets DaddyP and the pics on TwitPic always bring a smile to my face ;)

Shall we ‘Tweet’ in here today Karen … OK begin ‘twittering’ -

DaddyP is sitting on the sofa trying to make the TG do some coffee using the power of his mind …. it shows no sign of working …

I’ve been tweeting for aaages and would be lost without it.
In fact, you can look forward to a new weekly spot right here all about Twitter. Watch this space! :)

unlike DP I enjoy following the links – if you follow interesting twitters you can pick up some great info and tips. I don’t use Twitter enough and use it mainly to point out info re Fuel – that probably make me a tad tedious…thinking about it…but then again it is quite vital info!!!

  7. sylvied (408 comments) says:

    @Richard: looking forward to it!

  8. Karen (132 comments) says:

@Richard: I can’t get enough of Twitter, so I’m looking forward to the spot also ;)

  9. [...] I’m so happy to announce that those most wonderful people over at Fuel My Blog have let me free on the FMB Blog and my first post, of many hopefully, is now up, it’s titled Twitter vs Blogging. [...]

I am addicted as well and even blogged about Twitter a couple of times – that’s quite funny blogging about microblogging.

  11. Kendall (12 comments) says:

Twitter is like a text message whereas blogging is like a verbal phone conversation. It could also be like basement pornography versus Salvador Dali. Blogging is writing, which is a dirty, reptilian form of art – art being much more subtle than just blurting out the nouns, verbs, adjectives – the parts of speech that photocopy ideas into the reader’s consciousness.

I suppose it’s not impossible to ’start a revolution’ with 140 characters, albeit more difficult than with a full length text such as Moby Dick.

It’s not surprising that Twitter has caught on like it has because our species is by nature driven to the lowest common denominator, and it seems that a cutely customized Twitter page and the ability to write cute little posts that amount to nothing on a historical timeline, fits right into our predisposition for the least amount of effort with the maximum payoff as the goal.

I’m playing with it but don’t know if I will stick. It’s a time suck and it’s kinda like a lot of people standing in a room just speaking randomly. Not all that much interaction.

    Hi Karen
    Great to see you hear.
I twitter but not as much as I would like as I don’t seem to have enough time to keep up with all this technology. Twitter is fun and I love the short messages for quickie up dates but blogging gives you more scope to witter lol :-)

Dang ‘here’ not ‘hear’ doh!!! … I have a had a very busy day … :-(

I’m a journalist (of sorts) and at the company I work for all us journos are being encouraged to use Twitter as a way of keeping in touch with their ‘beats’ and finding breaking news first. It’s quite funny watching bemused hacks trying to get to grips with new technology.

As a blogger, I find Twitter useful for recording those little things that in themselves aren’t quite substantial enough to constitute a blog post. Also the character limit stops me waffling on like I’m prone to doing (which reminds me – better stop this comment now).

    I love Twitter. ;)

I have a twitter clone sitting on our server, someone started to build it in September but let us down…it was to enable us to talk using our accounts on fmb..sniff sniff – any techie can help to finish it…sobs…it just needs styling…seriously.

    Great post BTW :)

@kevin … oh yes I remember that you were going to introduce an interactive type chatty thing on FMB … I just thought it was still in the design stage … oh I wish I was techie and could help … I could knit you something stylish though lol !

  20. KevinD (142 comments) says:

@70s go on knit me a mankini :)

I Twittered for a while with a Twittery widget on my blog, I’m just getting interested again. It can’t replace blogging but it does have its own special art – weaving meaning into that little biddy space.

We should have themed Twitters – like putting a whole novel or event in one Tweet.

In fact what about word of the day Tweets – we do that at work, alternative meanings for words. Here’s today’s:

Roughage – Measurement of the degree to which a golf ball slows when rolling across grass

  28. Karen (132 comments) says:

@Crofty: That’s a great idea for word of the day, we could use a hash tag like #fmbwod in each tweet, so who’s going to start today then ;)

  29. Alex (2 comments) says:

Twitter is like SMS messages while blogging is an essay writing. In terms of convenience, I find twitter a lot easier because you can stay connected and up to date even through mobile phones.

  30. Michelle (5 comments) says:

I love both, but generally see social media such as Twitter or FriendFeed, or micro-blogs such as Twitter or Tumblr as extensions to my blogs, with additional features.

Twitter has a better dynamic in being in-your-face real-time, and it’s easier to follow or be followed on Twitter, so can open up a whole new realm of people quite quickly. You can send out links and queries really quickly, and people are sometimes more quick to respond if it’s only in 140 characters.
