The Friday Five – Work

Week nine of The Friday Five – This week the topic is work.

What is it?

Simply answer the five questions below, either copy and answer on your blog linking back to here (leave the link in the comments) or just answer in the comments – up to you )

Usual disclaimer – all questions are random rubbish.

  1. When you were a child, what job did you want to have when you grew up?
  2. What was your first job?
  3. What was your best job and why?
  4. What is your dream job and why?
  5. If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?

That’s all folks – and as a bonus, if we hit 50 comments this week (and I won’t count ten comments from one person!), one of you lucky commenters will get a fuelmyblog pack – yes, a pack of stuff such as T-Shirt, stickers and random things.

1 – I wanted things that nobody else could ever get ahold of. Things that Ripley might have collected.
2 – EMT / Firefighter. Honest. I have the pictures to prove it!
3 – The job I have now. Self-employed Writer/Photographer/Website Designer. I’m self-employed and am my own boss. Who could ask for anything more?
4 – If I could get paid to do nothing at all, then that would be my dream job. Might that be called a “Professional Slacker”?
5 – Anyone who has half a brain. I hate working with or for people who can’t think for themselves.

By the way, [about this contest] please send me free stuff, or at least consider sending me free stuff. I like things that are free. :)

Did I mention that I like free stuff…?

When you were a child, what job did you want to have when you grew up?

I wanted to be a nurse.

    What was your first job?

    Dishwasher at a local restaurant.

What was your best job and why?

Deaf Mentor in early intervention–still doing it. Love working with families and seeing deaf & HH kids.

What is your dream job and why?

I think I’m doing all my dreams jobs right now– I work for a videophone company (love to promote videophones), have a writing job that pays and I work in early intervention. The dream would be to draw a betty salary from it all but that can happen in time.

If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?

I’d like to work with Guy (does he even need a last name?)–just to see what his day is like and how he accomplishes everything.

1.) A teacher, until I realized it would probably lead to jail time for me. I guess killing unruly children is frowned upon?
2.) Well I did babysit daily from the age of 12 (for a neighbor) but I know you don’t mean that. First paid job? Dairy Queen. Banana split sales were horrid. Splitting banana skins with your thumb all day actually hurts.
3.) Fundraiser for a charitable organization. It doesn’t get better than getting to pitch and then implement crazy schemes!
4.) Publishing some of the flotsam I have in file folders.
5.) I’m lucky that many of the people I admire are mainly those in my daily life, whom I’ve already been able to work with in some way or another (not necessarily for pay). There have been some folks I’ve met online, whom I’d love to work with… but I’m going to be cheeky and refuse to name them. It’s more fun that way.

Now. Going after the sympathy (cheat) vote, please divide all the freebies fairly, and give them to 70steen and me. We’re both suffering so… we should get them. ;-)

    4. Dream job as a teacher to Secondary school students because it’s nice to make an impact.

    5. Grisham from CSI as he knows absolutely everything about anything.

    4. I like what I’m doing now (writing), but it would be cool to take it to another level.
    5. I’d be happy working with someone creative who is also down-to-earth.

    1. When you were a child, what job did you want to have when you grew up? I wanted to be a Belly Dancer. (To which my very old-fashioned Italian father replied, “Oh no. She wants to be a courva.”)

    2. What was your first job? I swept up hair and served drinks in a hair salon. Occasionally I’d run to the store to buy the owner cigarettes because as she said they “helped her poo”. (That was back in the 80’s when 14 year olds could still buy cigarettes.)

    3. What was your best job and why? Unemployment because I get to be really creative.

    4. What is your dream job and why? I want to be a SUCCESSFUL artist. (Be careful what you ask for. I wasn’t specific enough when I asked to be an artist.) Because… being an unsuccessful artist is heart-breaking. And I miss having money for things like bills and shoes. And name-brand deodorant. And I could use a little positive feedback occasionally.

    5. If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why? John Stewart because funny and smart and progressive is a perfect combination in a coworker. Or Charo might be kind of fun to work with. We could “kootchy kootchy” all day long and giggle and sing songs.

    6. Tell us about your super cool blog. OK. It’s called “Fun for the Unemployed”. You can find it at (no www) funfortheunemployed(dot)blogspot(dot)com. I write sort of funny, sarcastic semi-memoir-ish type letters and share ideas of cheap activities you can do at home. Thanks for asking.

    It’s five o’clock
and I walk through the empty streets
    thoughts fill my head
    but then still
    No one speaks to me
    My mind takes me back
to the years that have passed me by
    (interlude)
It is so hard to believe
    That it’s me
    that I see
    in the window pane
it is so hard to believe
that all this is the way
    that is has to be
    It’s five o’click
and I walk through the empty streets
    The night is my friend
    And in him
    I find sympathy
And so I go back to the years that have to past me by
    (interlude)
It is so hard to believe
    That it’s me
    that I see
    in the window pane

    1. I wanted to be a ‘Spaceman’ and as a toddler I regularly rode my go-kart to the library in a vein attempt to hail a passing flying saucer. As soon as I found out there were no positions available for spacemen and the only alternative was an astronaut I could never decide again.
    2. Apart from the odd weekend cleaning cars or delivering papers it was most likely working in publishing sales for Campaign Magazine at the Haymarket Group. Now that sucked.
    3. I’ll tell you if and when it ever happens.
    4. To be rich and self-indulgent enough to employ minions in a similar set-up to Andy Warhol’s factory. i.e – that’s my idea, now paint/print/film/write it.
    5. Most likely a clone of myself.

  31. Posted November 7, 2008 at 10:54 pm | Permalink

    1. An RN like my mother

    2. Working at a day care. I was 14 and the children I worked with were infants to about three years of age. I worked about four hours a day five days a week earning $5/hour (more than the California minimum wage at the time)

    3. Working for a financial firm. Great salary, benefits (unlimited sick days) and my co-workers were really nice to work with.

    4. Working for myself; web based business; ecommerce. I love the idea of setting my own schedule and I love computer/internet.

    5. I don’t have a specific person in mind, but I would like to work with someone who is motivated, has self-discipline and not afraid of failure. Any takers? ;)

Oh this is fun! I love talking about myself, haha ;-)

    1. I was the biggest nerd in the Kindergarten. I wanted to be an aerospace engineer. thats right, not an astronaut like the rest of the class…I actually wanted to be the one to build the rockets.
    2. Serving hamburgers at a restaurant down the road. It was terrible.
    3. Last summer (I’m a student) I was on a construction team that remodeled a fabric store. The reason I liked it was because it allowed me to be creative, use my hands, interact with people, and since we had to work before the store opened for the day, I was always home before lunchtime, which was lovely because I had the whole day free to do anything i wanted after work.
    4. I think I would like something where I could set my own hours, meet people and friends, and be an expert in something. A small business owner of some sort, perhaps? I don’t know yet. I’ve got a year of college left to figure it out.
    5. I don’t know…probably a rock star. the one thing I’ve found out about them is they’re much smarter and savvier than Spinal Tap would have you believe. They know how to market their goods and they know how to appeal to people and get your attention. they know how to translate their craft into multimedia. Creativity is really important to me, and those who can make it big in music generally have more skill than they get credit for.
